Information Systems and Clinical Technology

Program Outcome Covers:
Medical Terminology
Basic and Advanced Knowledge of Healthcare Informatics
Technical Security
Use of Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Root Cause Analysis
Systems Integration and Information Systems Downtime and Disaster Recovery

Reflection Number 1
Our coursework in HCIN 542, System Analysis and Design for Health Care Informatics, introduced and prepared us for implementing computer-based information and technology systems. We covered many cycles a systems analyst must go through to succeed and be effective. The artifact I chose was the Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA). The FMEA taught me to look for potential problems and identify them in order to prevent an unfavorable or dangerous event from happening. This assignment made me understand the different, small, yet impactful items that could cause major problems in addition to obvious and significant ones.

Reflection Number 2
ENLC 557, Strategic Planning and Management of Health Systems, coursework navigated us through the tools and techniques for strategic planning and change management. The concept of strategic planning is very important to be able to address challenges and pivot to avoid pitfalls. Strategic planning applies to many industries, but especially to healthcare since it is so dynamic and constantly changing. The artifact I selected was our reflection assignment to construct a stakeholder map for my chosen healthcare organization. In completing this task, I realized how many stakeholders are in any healthcare organization and how they may impact the successes or failures.

Reflection Number 3
The course I have chosen an artifact from is HCIN 543, Database Design and Knowledge Management. This course provided skills in database management using Microsoft Access, part of Microsoft Office 365, and Structured Query Language (SQL). I was familiar with Microsoft Excel, but Microsoft Access is better for managing data. Regarding SQL, I had heard of it but never used it. We used SQL to communicate with databases and perform tasks relating to the database. Our first exercise was to use problem-solving and analytical skills relating to information from the TAL distributors database, a fictitious organization (or maybe not).
